Continuing the future of LotRO discussion: The E3 press release.

Just looking for opinions and different points of veiws. A nice civil and sane place to discuss things without the 10,000 idiots on Glff or the main forums.

The fact that they are introducing "free to play" isn't all that surprising considering this is how they've operated another of their games, Dungeons & Dragons Online, for a long time. That Turbine is introducing it *now* rather than at release of the game is what's surprising to me. I can see the benefit of free to play from the standpoint that many features, items, and instances are increasingly becoming a timesink to complete and almost impossible to be gained by anyone who is a casual player or someone who for whatever reason has a difficult time finding groups to help complete the quests. I don't invest enough time in the game anymore to really care either way but from my experience playing DDO, it's really not a horrible thing but I guess I'll just take a wait-and-see approach.

Just because I found this interesting I thought I would post this. It is not LOTRO specifically but it is relevant to the topic of free to play. Another MMO (and it is a MMO in only the most loosely defined terms) has just announced their intention of going free to play. Global Agenda a third person shooter MMO who, up until recently, didn't even have a system for weapon drops or loot quality (and the introduction of that has actually been a topic of controversy).

This is the announcement for reference
http://forum.globalagendagame.com/gablog/index.php/2010/06/23/ga-now-sub-free/

I can't remember if I said this or not but I believe this confirms my beliefs that MMOs will, more and more, move to the side of microtransactions as opposed to the widely prevelant subscription fees. Beyond the fact that people tend to spend more if they do it in small incremental amounts over time than they would through a subscription or large purchase here or there, the free to play micro-transaction system allows the "customer" to customize his game according to his desires. For example, in LOTRO I could care less about such features as fishing, the festivals, and other similar items. However, others might disagree and want to participate. Micro-transactions mean I can pay for what I want and only what I want and the same goes for everyone else. Albeit, LOTRO is a bit more stringent on its policies than Global Agenda with all the restriction on the number of alts you can have and bag space (that alone will make people want to get a subscription). However, it still means you buy what you want and not what you don't.

Could I be wrong? Yes. Though I wonder if this transition might not be so bad but rather quite interesting. Who knows? Though I am interested to see what happens

I recently got in closed beta for the upcoming P2P feature - when Turbine lifts the NDA, I'll share my thoughts.

http://www.mordororbust.com/233-lotro-store-beta-screenshots/ Pictures of everything thats in the lotro store!

And since we're on the topic of upcoming changes and I'm too lazy to make a new thread.. Raid locks are being removed? Or at least for Helegrod they are! http://www.massively.com/2010/07/02/the-road-to-mordor-touring-the-falls-new-content-with-turbine

Dunno if this is old news and stuff but hey! New to me :P I'm actually liking this change! Someone take a picture of this! Geo liking change!! :O They're also making helegrod a 12 man with the upcoming change to the raid stuff. I hope they do this with the rift! No more fighting through a 4+ hour raid just to lose a roll on one item :*(

Thoughts? :)

Thanks for keeping your eye out for this kinda stuff Geo.

I didn't look through all the store items. Most of it seemed geared to giving F2P players content that we, as subscribers, already have. At least the parts I glanced over. Some of the buffs seemed a bit... out-of-the-way-tempting. Nothing Destiny points can't buy already...I think. The stat scrolls are utter BS though. I can see some unfortunate situations in the future... "What do you mean you want to join my raid when you haven't maxed out all your stats?" But there is already enough endgame-pug assholery that Ex-WoW players like that won't be a major change. It's already established that PuGs at the endgame are 90% fail and 9% bad experiences, more fuel to that fire won't make a difference...there is just nothing left to burn. Kin groups are the way to go.

I've probably said this before, probably a few times in this thread (I'm just too lazy atm to scroll down and see) but the more we ignore the store aspect of the new update, the better off we are. This is shaping up to be a pretty good update to the game (minus the store)

I know they said they were doing away with locks for Helegrod, but I don't know about the other raids. I'm undecided. as an abolition of locks would mean stuff like the turtle would be grindable. 10 minutes per fight means 3 hours of work = 3 lvl 60 First ages. They would actually become easier to obtain then second ages. Further dungeon crawls would become annoying because you would have to do the entire thing in one sitting or else have to start over. Locks were originally supposed to be a way of "saving" progress. However on the other hand if when we start to do the Watcher, it would be nice to be able to get more than one piece of armour for one kinnie per week. I hope they come up with something good.

My thoughts anyway.

That was my main concern also.. After reading the article though, its basically, you walk into Helegrod and have 4 different doors to choose, each leading to a different boss of the raid. So if anything its actually an improvement over the current system for out of date raids, since you won't have to sit through hours upon hours of the same old stuff you've done countless of other hours doing just to get to the place where you want to go. I could see them somehow doing this with the newer raids too. They could make it so you or the leader would have to complete doors 1-3 to be able to go into door #4. Though I can see that being easily exploitable and the raiders making loads of gold or whatever from people who want to just beat the raid so they can say they beat it first.

As for the stat tomes, they can be found in game somehow.. random drops or SM grind or some garbage that will probly be waaaay too much of a hassle for people to do or want to do.. like the empowerment scroll grind with 2nd ages *:| . They go up to +40 or +50 I believe.. I'll link the threads for people who want to sift through pages upon pages of people arguing at the end of the post. The biggest thing that bugs me is the whole, everything in the store that will be for "advantage" you will be able to aquire through the game, through random drops, grind or just through earning points through playing it.. They could basically have a pot that gives you god mode, that you would have to spend $25 per one or.. I dunno? Do BG HM 100 times to just get one instead. Also.. I feel bad for the casters who will need to spend all their TP on those pots since I'm guessing they're gonna be better than any you can acquire in game *:|

*EDIT* NDA has been lifted! Skill changes listed below! They might not be accurate since they are from the players and not the devs..

Burglars 'Ready and Able' skill now reset Mischievous Glee and Burglar's Antidote, they can also stance dance while mounted and Disable has been fixed.. Not a lot has been changed for them from what I've heard.

Captains!! Got a much needed change.
1) Banners no longer have the 10/20% self buff, they are now flat morale/power increase and a flat melee offense rating #. Group effects still apply as normal. This is probably the change with the biggest amount of complaint behind it. Honest answer you are going to lose a bit of morale, and melee offense rating.

2) There are now Level 65 banners. This makes up for the morale loss a LITTLE.

3) New skill obtained at level 1. "Sure Strike" 6 second cooldown, about the same damage as defensive strike. Cannot be parry or blocked.

4) Lead the charge is now the defacto DPS line. All herald improvements move to this line, all threat improvements go to LoM line, as does Adherent of Elendil. LotC capstone ungates Shadow's Lament, adds 50% damage, but puts it at around a 1 minute cooldown. Capstone also gives you access to oathbreaker armaments. Captains can now bypass the 15% max crit rating as you build into LOTC, after a number of traits(it's 3 or 4, can't recall exactly) are slotted you get an extra 5% crit rating.

5) Leader of Men is now the tanking/buffing line. Capstone adds threat to noble mark, but also applies a group wide shield brother effect. The main shield brother still gets the full effect, but the group will also get a lesser effect, I don't recall the #'s. Adherent of Elendil is now in this line instead of LoTC. This may be a viable grouping build now because of the group wide shield brother buffs.

6) HoH is the same as it was.

7) Herald Armament's now apply a armour buff to your herald. There are now high level armaments as well. The armour buff scales with the level of the armament.

8) I don't recall exacts, but heralds have been adjusted a bit:
Herald of War: Does more damage than Hope/Power
Herald of Hope: Heals more with lend courage.
Herald of Victory: Returns power with lend resolve.

9) Captains can now summon, and apply shield brother while mounted.

Champions! Got a fear removal. Hedge now also applies a 15second parry buff even while in fervour. CJs no longer affect CBR and bleeds stack from other champs!

Guardians! Got a wound removal. One of their bleed stacks. Now can use Protection and Shield Wall while mounted ;) . Heart of Fire trait line now has a +520 crit defence rating. LoD? can now be used without a weapon.

Hunters! Got some fancy new skills and Blindside got changed, it is now an interrupt!

New skill:
Blood arrow, level 44.

Uses 3 focus, 5% morale, no power. Similar damage to Penetrating Shot, higher crit multiplier. 10s cooldown.

New skill:
Dazing Blow, level 48

melee skill, 2 attacks, 5s daze!!!, 52 power cost 60s cooldown, so not spammable. Improved Dazing Blow available @ level 52 - REMOVES 3 CORRUPTIONS.

I've also heard with the new UI update, now all your port skills will open up in a tab like when you track or something along those lines.. Enjoy the new room for your new skills! :D

Lore-Masters! Rejoice Sil! Now your stun immunity will make you immune to CJs too! Debuffs were also fixed.. Also:
- Gust of Wind now does frost damage. Small buff, but alot of people asked for it.

- The Harmony with Nature trait does not affect Test of Will any longer, but now affects both Burning Embers and Lightning-storm, this was a good change.

Minstrels.. Get nothing very exciting.. When you learn skills while leveling has been changed, Inspired fellows is now learned at level 20 instead of level 10. You can mentor while mounted now and buffs now display on some classes properly.

Rune-Keepers! Had two bug fixes.
Writ of Blazing Fire now causes a Tier 2 Writ of Fire to go down to a Tier 1 Writ of Fire.

Icy Discourse now works properly if slow is removed by a DoT.

Wadens!
There is now a rep-based Forochel muster sold for money in Sûri-kylä. There is a bartered rep-based Enedwaith muster which will take you to the skirmish camp located in the south of Enedwaith. Buying a muster skill is now like buying any other skill – it is immediately added to the first open spot on your hotbars (it used to be like buying a recipe, you’d have to find the paper in your inventory and take a moment to read it).
The two gambit removal skills, Quick Recovery and Recover, are now Fast skills instead of Immediate skills. It is once again impossible to skip the Defiant (Disco) Challenge or Dance of War animations no matter how much extra power you’re willing to spend as Wardens have no Immediate single-button skills.
Everything which gives a power discount to a gambit (spear, shield, fist) now also gives a power discount to the appropriate base skills (Quick Thrust, Shield-bash, Warden’s Taunt) although nothing gives a discount to a mastery skill. This includes the carvings and power reductions from legacies.
Apparently, back in the Mirkwood expansion, the legacy “Javelin Toss Range” was stealth updated to apply to all javelin skills. The name of the legacy is now changing to “Javelin Skills Max Range” to reflect this.
The Ambush skill no longer starts autoattacks even though it doesn’t matter what sort of damage the ambushed mob takes, it’s not getting back up until the five second ambush time runs out.

CJs in the moors now are treated as stuns. No more GGG.. YYY.. BRGYBR.. on anything other than NPCs. Any skill that affects a stun will now work with CJs. Bye bye half a server of wargs.. Hello half a server of reavers/BAs :P . I've heard Second age symbols can now be bartered for with Skirmish Marks. Bye bye 100g symbol farmers! :D Those pots that restore 80-120 power or moral every 2 seconds for 10 or 12 seconds(or whatever it was..) are also on a CD timer of.. 10 or 12 seconds *:| . Or so I've heard.. And last but not least! Those lame stat tomes. Here is what someone posted that explains it all.

The tomes are 1 use consumables that give a permanent increases to your character ability scores.

They come in 5 tiers. Each tier raises the corresponding ability score by 10 points. (So once you have used all 5 tomes for an ability score it will have a permanent +50 increase)

They show up like a new kind of passive ability on your charatcer sheet: agility - tier II, will - tier III, etc)

You cant use a tier II tome for agility, until you have already used a tier I tome for agility, etc

So to get the max benefit you need to get 5 tomes for each ability scores (a tier I, a tier II, a tier III, a tier IV, and a tier V). In order to get the permanent total boost of +50 to all of your ability scores you will need to get 25 tomes.

You can find tomes as drops in instances or you can buy them at the LOTRO store. The tomes that you find can be traded and/or sold in the auction hall. If you buy one from the LOTRO store it will be bind on acquire.
